A clogged filter is a common problem, and not only in diesel cars: newer petrol cars with catalytic converters and GPFs (gasoline particulate filters) are affected too. Frequent short trips in town can clog a filter within a short time.
Removing the filter is an offence: the vehicle no longer complies with its type approval and will fail its MOT or NCT. Driving a vehicle that does not meet its emissions standard can also lead to heavy fines.
Many workshops do not offer DPF cleaning and instead advise customers to buy a new filter, or a cheap replacement of doubtful quality that often does not meet the manufacturer’s specifications. Depending on the car, a new original DPF can cost well over a thousand pounds or euros. Used filters are cheaper, but buying one carries the risk of getting a damaged or defective part.
What to do?
The answer is hydrodynamic cleaning, which restores the filter to its original performance. For the customer, professional cleaning costs a fraction of the price of a new filter, even after adding the cost of removal, refitting and any adaptation or calibration the car needs afterwards. Filters from heavy vehicles cost more to clean, but the saving compared with a new part is even greater.
Pressure to protect the environment, strict emissions standards and heavy penalties for removing the DPF mean that professional DPF cleaning is increasingly in demand. Offering this service can significantly increase a workshop’s revenue and strengthen its reputation and competitiveness.
